Plymouth Herring Run Celebration 2019
Come Celebrate the return of herring to Plymouth Town Brook at the 2019 Herring Run on Saturday, April 27. The event begins with a “fish” parade in Brewster Gardens at 10 a.m., then moves to Plimoth Grist Mill and Jenney Pond Park from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Visitors can watch the herring swim and help scientists collect information about their progress. Kids of all ages can learn about eels, watch a Wampanoag fishing and cooking demonstration, meet a Pilgrim herring warden, and talk about fish with the Herring Lady.
The parade follows the herring as they swim up Town Brook to lay their eggs. It starts at the Brewster Garden foot bridge and ends in Jenney Pond Park. Creative fish hats, masks and costumes encouraged.
Other activities include a rope ladder and slide simulating the herring migration, as well as depictions of river predators, such as great blue heron, horned owl, bald eagle, otter and raccoon. Kids will receive free copies of a super-hero comic book “Run, Herring, Run” and maze.
In addition, there will be guided walks of the Town Brook by fish biologist Eric Hutchins at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. All activities are free.
The Plimoth Grist Mill will be in action while enjoying special family activities and samples of treats made with the mill’s signature flours. Admission to Plimoth Grist Mill is free to Plymouth residents.
