The annual event known as the Red Acres Christmas Sing, or Sing, originated in 1955 when George and Mary Mullen gathered a small group of boys and girls of the Hanson 4-H Sheep Club around a fire to toast marshmallows and sing Christmas carols. They also created a manger scene that included live animals from the 4-H club. In 1958, ministers from the three local churches stood side by side caroling at the Sing – making it a rare ecumenical event for its time and set a precedent for future gatherings.

From those early years, the Sing has grown and evolved, but it has never strayed from its original intent of providing the Hanson community with an informal opportunity to celebrate the holiday season with friends and neighbors. Attendance has ranged from as low 10 to 20 family and friends to approximately 800 community members. Even during the most unprecedented blizzards of 2007, 2008, and 2009, extended family and friends came together to plow and shovel so that the Sing could be held. The Sing has become a cherished tradition not only for the Mullen family, but for Hanson residents and others who travel from great distances each year to attend.
George and Mary would feel particularly blessed to see that their four children, joined by their spouses, fifteen grandchildren and their spouses, and five great-grandchildren have continued the tradition
