New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival
If you are looking for a fun food experience this weekend, check out New Bedford Seaport Chowder festival l this Sunday August 28th in the downtown New Bedford’s Custom House Square. This great family friendly food festival runs from 12noon to 5 pm with the food tasting and voting wrapping up by 3:15pm. Besides chowda there will be plenty of other things to do including live music, award presentations, food and drink booths. With the price of admission you are able to sample and taste the offerings from area restaurants, many offering one or more in the categories of Clam Chowder, Seafood Chowder, Kale Soup and Stuffed Quahogs

Some of the restaurants competing for the best Chowder : Atria Fairhaven; Bittersweet Farm; Cotali Mar; Fathom’s Bar & Grille; Freestone’s City Grill; Little Red Smokehouse; M & C Cafe; Mar-Lees Seafood, Mike’s Restaurant; Morin’s Fine Catering; Pasta House; Pour Farm Tavern, River’s End Cafe; Rose Alley Ale House; Seaside Seafood; and St. Luke’s Hospital.

Outside the main tent will be smaller tents for food and drink vendors that will provide soft drinks, a Massachusetts beer selection and wines from Travessia Urban Winery. NEW this year, The Cocktail Guru will be creating a signature cocktail and mixing up some cool drinks. Panera Bread will offer free samples. Food concessions will also be available for those who want something other than the “Chowda”. Cafe Arpeggio will sell wrapper sandwiches, salads and homemade ice cream; and The Artisan Kitchen will sell a variety of baked goods that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Music is a big part of this festival: Back again this year is local favorite Shipyard Wreck , preceded by one of newest bands to rock the area: Captain Malibu & Friends. Lobster Races are back again. They are conducted in a custom made tank set up in the Carter’s lot across from Custom House Square. This fund raiser benefits the local YMCA. Lobsters “run” in several heats and spectators have the option of placing fun wagers to win cool prizes. Young children will also be entertained with craft activities organized by volunteers from the New Bedford Ocean Exploration. NEW – Take a souvenir photo with our own friendly pirate “Captain Jack Sparrow”.

Tickets are $12 in advance , $15 day of, $5. for children 6-12, free for 5 and younger.
