Abington Public Library Free Kids and Teens Summer Events 2013

Abington public library will be hosting free events all summer during June, July and August

Join the Abington Public Library for the kick-off of the annual Summer Reading Program, Dig Into Reading!, on Monday, June 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. Kids who register on the afternoon of June 24 will be able to play games, decorate a shovel, dig for buried treasure, design a button, and more. From June 24 to Aug. 16, Summer Reading participants can earn a token for every hour spent reading. At the end of the summer, the Friends of the Library will fund animal sponsorships based on the number of tokens earned. This year, participants will be reading to help two endangered animals, a Komodo dragon at the National Zoo in Washington DC and a Right whale through the New England Aquarium. The library will be waiving overdue fines for participants who register for the Summer Reading Program on June 24; some restrictions apply.

Calling all teens — Register for the Teen Summer Reading Program, Beneath the Surface, from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 24. Check-out the teen room, learn about the upcoming photography challenge and sign-up for our first teen program of the season with Jef Czekaj, a local author, cartoonist and D.! More details noted below. The Teen Summer Reading Program is for students going into the sixth grade and above.

Dig Into Reading! and Beneath the Surface are sponsored by the Abington Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The library would like to extend a special thank you to the Friends of the Library, the Anderson Foundation Cultural Series, the J.L. Bumpus Fund, the Fund in Memory of Melba Smith, and Lowe’s Home Improvement of Abington for generously funding the performers and supplies for the 2013 Children’s and Teen Summer Reading Program.

 

Museum Passes

The Abington Public Library provides several passes to Boston, South Shore and local area museums and attractions. These passes provide free or discount admission depending on the attraction. Passes are good for one day and non-paper passes need to be returned before the next day’s opening.   Passes include Battleship cove,  Boston’s Children’s Museum, Easton Children’s Museum, Museum of Science and Roger Williams zoo.

The museum pass program at the Abington Public Library is provided through the hard work and generosity of the Friends of the Abington Public Library, the Abington Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Abington.

Passes may be borrowed by an Abington resident with an adult card in good standing. It is advisable to reserve a pass well in advance of the selected date, especially during school vacation times.  Passes may be reserved at the Circulation Desk by phone at (781) 982-2139 or by clicking the link below.

Registration opens for the following programs held in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, June 19:

Cats Only — Do you like to create your own stories? Do you dream of being an author some day? Well, get ready to make it happen! Join us for a day with Jef Czekaj, local children’s book author, cartoonist and DJ, on Wednesday, June 26.Kids in kindergarten through second grade are invited to “Cats Only” at 11:15 a.m. Jef will show us how he transforms things that inspire him (like his cats!) into a book. And get ready for some crazy read alouds… Kids in third to fifth grade are invited to “From Brain to Book” at 12:15 p.m. Jef will take us on an adventure from sketch book to rough drafts to final art…oh, and he’s going to rap one of his favorite stories “Hip and Hop, Don’t Stop!”. This will be a creative day you don’t want to miss! Jef Czekaj is the author of favorites like Hip and Hop, Don’t Stop!, A Call for a New Alphabet and many more. Thank you to the Anderson Foundation Cultural Series for funding this program!

Cartoonist Workshop — Calling all teens: ever wonder what it takes to be a professional cartoonist / author? Now is your chance to find out. Spend the afternoon with Jef Czekaj, a local author who is one part cartoonist…and one part DJ on Wednesday, June 26 at 2 p.m. Learn what a cartoonist does all day and get some fun tips on becoming a cartoonist yourself through some drawing exercises. This workshop is for sixth graders and older. Thank you to the Friends of the Library for funding this program.

Teen Photo Challenge — What do you think the teen theme Beneath the Surface means? Show us your most creative shot that captures this idea. Photo submissions are due by Friday, July 12. Please email photos as an attachment to ablib@ocln.org (include “Teen Photo” as subject and your name, age and phone number in the email). Hard copies of photos can also be delivered to the library. Teens can submit up to three photos. The Teen Photo Gallery will go on display on Thursday, July 18. This program is for sixth grade and older.

The Jitterbugs —the library on Thursday, June 27 at 11:15 a.m. Enjoy a great sing along for our youngest library users, ages zero to five. And don’t forget your dancing shoes! Space is available for 75 participants. Thank you to the Anderson Foundation Cultural Series for sponsoring this program!

Lunch Bunch Book Club — The first meeting will be on Monday, July 8 from noon to 1 p.m. During the first session, members will get to know one another, talk about the goals of the Book Club and work on a fun art challenge. The second session will meet on Monday, July 29 from noon to 1 p.m. We will share our thoughts on the book and bring it to life in a crazy way… Club members should attend both sessions and should bring a bag lunch. Lunch Bunch Book Club is for students entering the fourth grade and up in the fall. Thank you to the Friends of the Library for funding Lunch Bunch this summer!

Weekly regulars, Story Hour, Bedtime Story Hour and Toddler Time — will return starting the week of Tuesday, June 25. All of the following programs are funded by the Friends of the Library. Registration is not necessary for any of these activities, as participants will be accommodated on a first-to-arrive basis. Here comes Story Hour on Monday mornings at 11 a.m. from July 1 to Aug. 5 and Lauren is so excited. This program is for ages three to five and includes stories, songs, crafts and a whole lot of silliness. Children should feel comfortable separating from a parent / caregiver. Space is available for 24 participants. Put on your PJs, grab your favorite stuffed animal and join us for Bedtime Story Hour on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. from June 25 to Aug. 6. There is no better way to wrap-up the day before we say goodnight and sleep tight. This program is for ages 3 and older who are comfortable separating from a parent/caregiver; space is available for 24 participants. Get ready for Summer Toddler Time on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. from June 26 to Aug. 7. Join us for short stories, rhymes and songs…and surprise visits from Clifford, Curious George and more. Toddler Time is for babies and toddlers ages 0-3. Space is available for 15 kids plus a parent/caregiver.
