School of Thread is a sewing curriculum that teaches kids how to sew at home through monthly project kits.
Sew Fun! Not only is sewing both practical and creative, it also develops planning, engineering and math skills, strengthens fine motor skills, encourages patience and perseverance, and helps everyone beam with pride! We can’t help but enjoy that it gets our kids off of screens too.
Sew Easy! Everything you need for your project is included in each kit: fabric, thread, sewing tools and a high quality instruction booklet to use again and again with a pocket in the back to store your pattern pieces. All you need is a sewing machine. We provide the rest.
Sew Cool! We use modern fabrics and on-trend themes so our projects appeal to today’s kids. If you are going to spend time making something, it should be both fun and useful. We also include our favorite tools that have been tried and tested by all the sewists in our studio.
Sew Smart! We’ve been teaching kids to sew in our studio since 2015. Our experience enables us to anticipate challenges and guide you through them. Our kits provide step-by-step photos and detailed instructions written for kids to understand. And we’re just an email away if you need help.
With a background in education and a passion for sewing, I decided to combine my talents and opened my sewing studio, The Makery, in 2015. Throughout my years teaching adults and kids to sew, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. I had seen so many frustrated people struggling with poorly written patterns that I started writing my own to use instead. I strive to encourage independence and skill building with projects and patterns that students are excited to create. School of Thread is a way for me to give The Makery experience from the comfort of home. I know we don’t all have a local sewing school or a crafty relative around to teach our kids (or ourselves) to sew.
The School of Thread sewing kits are an exciting way for your child to learn how to sew. Our Kits and Project Packs give them fun new experiences and the pride of making something all by themselves. Even though our Kits are designed with kids in mind, we promise adults can use them too to finally figure out that sewing machine.
